Craft & making · Derby

Set inside the Silk Mill — the building widely credited as the world's first factory — this exhibition traces British wool from fleece to finished garment, with farmers, spinners, dyers and designers all given equal billing. It's a quietly brilliant use of a UNESCO World Heritage building: you can be looking at 18th-century mill machinery one minute and a rack of contemporary sustainable fashion the next.
Good for a slow solo wander or a rainy-day family visit — free in, donation on the way out, and easily combined with the rest of the Museum of Making's collection.
