Exhibition · Derby

Joseph Wright of Derby spent his career painting candlelit scientific experiments and secret gatherings by lamplight, and two of his most famous works — The Air Pump and The Orrery — have come home to Derby for the first time in eighty years, fresh from the National Gallery. Seeing them back in the collection that holds the largest set of Wright's work anywhere is a genuinely rare thing, and it costs nothing to walk in.
The museum itself is unhurried and easy — a proper local gallery rather than a queue-round-the-block blockbuster — so it suits a quiet weekday visit as much as a wet Saturday with an hour to spare in Derby city centre.
