Bath Children's Literature Festival

This is a proper city-wide takeover for young readers, with the likes of Dame Julia Donaldson, Katherine Rundell and Cressida Cowell appearing alongside comic workshops, illustration sessions and a dedicated schools programme. It's a rare chance for kids to meet the actual people behind the books on their shelf.

Bath in early autumn is gorgeous for wandering between venues, so build a day around one or two events and let the rest of the trip be Georgian streets, cafés and the independent bookshops that get swept up in festival spirit too.
