Joe O'Rourke paints on discarded DVD cases, which sounds like a gimmick until you're standing in front of one and realise how much is going on: scale jokes, half-legible text, a billboard, a dead bee, all pressed into service to ask what a painting is actually doing when it means something. Disc Unknown brings that body of work together with newer, larger mixed-media pieces across Castlefield Gallery's rooms, selected through the gallery's open-call programme for Manchester-based artists.
It's a small, sharp show rather than a sprawling one — the kind you can see properly in half an hour and think about for considerably longer. Free entry, Wednesday to Sunday, and an easy pairing with a wander along the canal afterwards.
