Things to Do in Liverpool — 13 Days Out Beyond the Beatles

Liverpool is one of Britain's most generous cities for a day out — a UNESCO waterfront, some of the best free museums in the country, and yes, the Beatles, done well. Here are 13 ideas.

The waterfront (mostly free)

• Royal Albert Dock — Tate Liverpool (free), the Merseyside Maritime Museum and International Slavery Museum (free), and the Beatles Story (ticketed) all around one handsome dock.
• Museum of Liverpool — free, modern, and brilliant on the city's own story.
• Mersey Ferry — the cheapest way to get the famous skyline view from the water.

Culture and music

• The Walker Art Gallery — free, and one of the finest collections outside London.
• The Cavern Club and a proper Beatles wander through the city for the fans.

For football fans

Anfield (Liverpool FC) and Goodison Park (Everton) both run stadium tours — a real day out for a football-mad family.

Practical notes

The centre and waterfront are flat and walkable, so you can do a lot on foot. The free museums make Liverpool a superb budget day out — build the day around the Albert Dock, then walk up to the Walker and St George's Hall. Rain is no problem here; nearly everything above is indoors.
