Best Days Out for Nature Lovers in the UK — 17 Wild Places

Britain's wildlife is at its best when you know where and when to look. This is a nature-lover's shortlist of days out — reserves, forests, coastlines and seasonal spectacles that reward the trip — organised so you can chase whatever's happening right now.

Seabird cities (spring–summer)

RSPB Bempton Cliffs, Yorkshire

Half a million seabirds — gannets, puffins, guillemots — packed onto chalk cliffs, viewable from safe clifftop platforms. One of the great wildlife spectacles in England, at its peak from April to July.

Farne Islands, Northumberland

A boat trip to breeding puffins, terns and one of England's largest grey-seal colonies. Book a landing trip in season (roughly May–July for the seabirds).

Seals (autumn–winter)

Donna Nook, Lincolnshire

Thousands of grey seals come ashore to pup from late October to December, viewable just metres away from a marked path — one of the UK's most accessible wildlife spectacles.

Blakeney Point, Norfolk

Boat trips from Morston Quay to a huge seal colony run year-round; the winter pupping season is extraordinary.

Wetlands & waterbirds

WWT Slimbridge, Gloucestershire

The birthplace of modern wetland conservation — hides, feeding stations and, in winter, thousands of wild swans and geese. Largely step-free and brilliant year-round.

RSPB Minsmere, Suffolk

The reserve that inspired Springwatch — bitterns, avocets, marsh harriers and, if you're very lucky, an otter. A full day of proper birdwatching.

Ancient woodland & forest

The Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire

Wild boar, fallow deer, sculpture trails and the mossy magic of Puzzlewood — a whole day of woodland with something for everyone.

Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire

Walk beneath the Major Oak, over 1,000 years old, through one of England's last stretches of ancient oak woodland.

Big skies & moorland

  • Dartmoor, Devon — wild ponies, tors and one of the last truly wild landscapes in southern England.
  • The Cairngorms, Scotland — reindeer, ospreys and the chance of a red squirrel or crossbill.
  • The North Norfolk Coast — a continuous ribbon of reserves; big-sky birdwatching at its best.

The rest of the seventeen

  • Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire (NT) — a fragment of the ancient fenland with boardwalk trails.
  • Skomer Island, Pembrokeshire — puffins at arm's length in early summer (book the boat well ahead).
  • Loch Garten, Speyside — ospreys on the nest, live from the RSPB hide.
  • The Knepp Estate, Sussex — Britain's most famous rewilding project, with safari-style walking tours.

Practical notes

Wildlife runs on a calendar — seabirds in early summer, seals in late autumn, wildfowl in winter — so time the trip to the spectacle. Take binoculars, dress for standing still in the cold, and keep your distance (a long lens beats a close approach every time). Many reserves are free to roam but charge for parking or landing boats, and the island trips (Farne, Skomer, Blakeney) need booking ahead. Always follow the reserve's guidance — these are working habitats first and attractions second.
